Eating bugs at the science centre

Telus Spark science centre in Calgary has a very good café serving tikka masala or Hungarian goulash. But if you adventurous, you can also try crickets and mealworms. So I did. The dried, crunchy snacks come in small packages. No preservatives, no colouring, only protein (1g in a 2-g package), some salt and pepper or you can choose other flavours. I admit, the mealworms did look like… well… worms. But my curiosity won, and I was rewarded. Both the crickets and the mealworms were quite tasty: nutty, crunchy, flavourful, and they are very nutritious. No wonder why these high-protein, low-carb snacks are praised as food for the future. Apparently eating crickets can be good for you, as they support the growth of the good bacterial flora in your gut. Clinical studies also confirm that eating crickets is safe and can even reduce inflammation in your body. Mealworms are also quite nutritious and not only contain lots of protein but also some vitamins and minerals. Both can be served fried, boiled, sautéed or roasted. Also raw, but I am not sure if I am ready for that yet.
