Creative lattes
I know, there are many jokes about Starbucks customers ordering half-sweet, non-fat, lactose-free, decaf, no-foam lattes. But I am always interesting in trying to new beverages with a twist. And today I had another opportunity to do just that. My friend Julia and I regularly go out for breakfasts and love exploring new places. The breakfast scene in Calgary is quite impressive and new cafés seem to appear in all quadrants of the city. Today, we put on our “Definitely YES” list the Espresso Café in Kensington. We enjoyed our smoked salmon egg benedict and the crab omelette with yummy hash browns and fresh salad, but what particularly attracted our attention was the espresso bar menu, and in particular the lattes. I am an espresso drinker (and, by the way, theirs was excellent), but I was quite intrigued by the turmeric, charcoal and blue algae latte varieties (the last two caffeine free!). Julia ordered the blue algae with spirulina, and I opted for the golden latte, with turmeric and spices. Both drinks looked very cool with the unusual colours and artistic foam. The algae latte was a little too sweet but very flavourful. I found the golden latte absolutely delicious; the balanced mix of spices certainly pleased my palate, and I will order it again. If you live in Calgary, the Espresso Café is definitely a place to check out!
P.S. Don’t miss the milk and cream dispensers that look like beer taps!
