Herring in strawberries

An idiomatic expression? A symbol? Or a real dish?

Most definitely a real dish. I can imagine the reader’s first reaction to the title: horror? disgust? disbelief? I admit, I was a bit sceptical when I saw this dish on the menu, even though I like herring. On the first attempt, it turned out that the restaurant “Herring Embassy” had run out, which was a good sign. When the dish finally arrived on the second visit, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw pieces of herring covered in heavy cream and sliced strawberries. However, the first bite revealed a delicious and balanced combination of flavours and textures. It is quite possible that those readers who are repulsed by herring simply have never had a good one. When it is not stringy, not pungent, and not overly marinated, the meat is tender, smooth, and it sort of adjusts to the flavours of the accompanying ingredients. Robert had similar observations after ordering herring in mango. In-house made strawberry and mango vodka, respectively, complemented the meals very well.
