Hachis parmentier
Daughter: Mom, what are you making for dinner?
Me: My shepherd’s pie.
Daughter: Does it have lamb?
Me: No, it has beef.
Daughter: So it’s not a shepherd’s pie. If it has beef, then it is a cottage pie.
Me: Oh, I don’t really like this name. Can you come up with a better name?
Daughter (after an Internet search): I found it. In France, they make a dish like yours and it’s called hachis parmentier.
Me: It already sounds even more delicious! Who would have thought that I was making a French delicacy for years!
From epicurious.com:
“Hachis Parmentier is a French casserole of mashed potatoes and leftover beef stew layered together with emmental cheese and baked. Although it isn't as glamorous as other French dishes, Hachis Parmentier is lick your plate clean tasty and the family usually loves it. Serve it with a nice green salad and voila.”
Yup, it is delicious and the family loves it!
