Breakfast Scene
Going out with friends for dinner regularly can get quite expensive, particularly for a social person. A while back, my friend Julia introduced me to the Calgary breakfast scene, and I haven’t looked back since. There is a wide variety of breakfast places in Calgary, from old fashioned to funky, for all sorts of crowds and all sorts of palates. They are vibrant, of great quality, and are definitely worth checking out. Getting together with friends for a meal doesn’t have to be hard on one’s pocket.
One of my recently discovered breakfast joints is “Empire Provision” on the corner of Heritage and Elbow. This unpretentious but cool café even satisfied the palate of my husband whom I took out on a breakfast date this morning. We started with an excellent Americano, and then I chose the Next Level Toast (sourdough with avocado, fabulous Italian ham, and sunny side egg, served with ricotta cheese – as seen in the photo), and Robert enjoyed his hash browns with eggs, merguez lamb sausage and crisply baked kale. Appetizing, fresh, delicious, promptly served with a smile, and it didn’t break the bank. Highly satisfying. If you wonder what other breakfast places in Calgary are worth checking, out, try Sidewalk Citizen in East Village, OEB downtown (stands for Over Easy Breakfast) or Monki Bistro.
Three cheers for breakfast! After all, it is the most important meal of the day.
